Collection 100: Dinosaurs in Crafts and Illustration

Initial dinosaur image research

Before deciding on what I would create for the Collection 100 brief, I researched general dinosaur images to help inspire what to do next.

Although this image probably isn't relevant to what I will create, I find it really interesting due to the amount of creatures there are and the size they take over. As this brief is all about '100', I also have the opportunity to create something quite dramatic.

Dinosaurs in illustrations and patterns for children

When I eventually decided that I would create dinosaur cards for children, I thought it would be useful to look at the different styles of illustrators who have drawn dinosaurs. These styles of illustrations are quite different to the illustrations I have found in the dinosaur books I have looked at. In the books, the designs are detailed, with the emphasis seeming to be on how scary the dinosaurs are, and the target audience seems to be boys. I prefer these designs, which are more attractive to look, and I think would appeal better to younger girls. I like the simplicity of the images, meaning that the focus can be on the interesting shapes of the dinosaurs, rather than the details in their skin. The bright, unrealistic colours also draw my attention more to this style of illustration than the serious style in the dinosaur books. I would also like to experiment with creating patterns with the dinosaur illustrations I will create, as I think these could be useful for packaging.

Where is Graphic Design?

As Malcolm Barnard writes in Graphic Design as Communication, "Most people see more examples of graphic design before they get to work than they see examples of art in a year." Graphic Design is everywhere! He writes about the letters, numbers and symbols on household items as well as the amount of packaging, branding, advertising and print someone will see in just one morning.

Just looking around my room I can see so many examples of Graphic Design. Here are some examples of the obvious, as well as the unique.

  • TV adverts
  • CDs/ DVDs
  • Signs
  • Websites
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Catalogues
  • Books
  • Adverts
  • Packaging
  • Wrappers
  • Labels
  • Clothes
  • Bus Stops
  • Instruction Manuals
  • Maps
  • Leaflets
  • Menus
  • Coffee Patterns
  • Graffiti
  • Cakes - As typogateux proved, graphic design can even be edible.

Were Dinosaurs Real?

Research Brief

Subject: Dinosaurs in Religion

I'm not really sure if I believe dinosaurs were real or not. I am a Christian, but only really started to doubt their existence after studying creation in A level Philosophy of Religion. So its a subject matter I find interesting, along with things I mentioned, like pub dilemmas and say, whats on TV, I like talking about whether or not dinosaurs were real. With this research brief maybe I will come to a decision.

Facts

Its quite hard to know what is really true, but these facts are believed in Science.
Answers in Genesis - Dinosaurs in the bible
  • The story of their discovery began back in the 1820s, when Gideon Mantell, an English doctor, found some unusual teeth and bones in a quarry. He believed that he had found an entirely new group of reptiles.
  • By 1841, about nine types of these different reptiles had been uncovered.
  • Dr Richard Owen, coined the name “Dinosauria,” meaning “terrible lizard.”
  • Some were as small as chickens, and others were even smaller. Some dinosaurs were very large, weighing in at an estimated 80 tons and standing 40 feet high. The average size of a dinosaur, however, was probably about that of a small horse.
  • Creation scientists have a different idea to evolution scientists about when dinosaurs lived. They believe they have evidence from the Bible that dinosaurs must have lived within the past thousands of years.
  • It is obvious that evolutionists don’t know how dinosaurs became extinct. The following is just a small list of theories:
Dinosaurs starved to death; they died from overeating; they were poisoned; they became blind from cataracts and could not reproduce; mammals ate their eggs. Other causes include volcanic dust, poisonous gases, comets, sunspots, meteorites, mass suicide, constipation, parasites, shrinking brain (and greater stupidity), slipped discs, changes in the composition of air, etc.
  • Dinosaurs lived and evolved for over 185 million years until they became extinct.
  • The cause for extinction has not been proven yet.
  • According to evolutionists, dinosaurs were animals that lived millions of years ago.
  • Most dinosaurs ate only plants, but some dinosaurs ate other animals.
  • Scientists aren't sure what colour dinosaurs were.  Some think dinosaurs might have been as colorful as many birds are today.
  • In 1902, part of a huge skeleton was uncovered in Montana.  Later, another was found in Wyoming.  From these bones the American paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn drew up the first pictures of this giant creature. He named it Tyrannosaurus Rex (meaning 'king of the tyrant reptiles') because it was the biggest meat - eating dinosaur then known to have lived on Earth.
  • Scientists in Argentina, South America, claim to have found the world's oldest dinosaur.  This creature, called Herrarasaurus, is said to be 230 million years old.
  • Dinosaurs sometimes had accidents, and fossil bones have been found with fractures in them.
  • The most complete skeleton of a Stegosaurus ever found has been dug up at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.  It had to be hauled out of the earth by an army helicopter.
  • Tracks left in the mud by dinosaurs provide clues as to how quickly they moved.  By measuring the distance between footprints, experts have worked out that some dinosaurs could have reached speeds up to 25 mph.
  • Velociraptor was probably very fierce.  A fossil found in Utah, shows its claws may have been up to 15 inches in length--as long as a three-year-old child's arm.  These claws formed very effective hooks with which to hold prey.

This website argues against Creationists. The creators of the website strongly believe in the existence of dinosaurs.

These images relate to the debate over the existence of dinosaurs within Christianity. This image and these tattoo's are proof that some people obviously feel very strongly about dinosaurs!
This may seem like an unusual room to have in a Christian museum, but in this museum, it is believed that dinosaurs were a part of God's creation story.

What is Design for Screen?

Brief: Investigate the question "What is Graphic Design For?" by exploring a broad range of contemporary design practice for digital media.

Before starting to study Graphic Design at degree level I had only looked at the subject in terms of advertising and packaging design, mainly for print. After trying to answer the question "What is Graphic Design?" I now know there is so much more to Graphic Design. In the brief I will look at what Design is for screen. I think today Design for screen is becoming much more popular, with nearly everyone using the internet or watching the television, and an increasing amount of interest in products with screens such as I-pads and I-phones.
Video

This video is the opening credits for Disney Pixar film, Monsters Inc. This is my favourite film, and I also love the style of animation used for the opening credits, so this example was an obvious choice when trying to answering the question, what is design for screen?

This video relates to a storyline based on the lifes on teenagers from the E4 series Skins. I think this video is beautiful and not what you would expect to see from this type of television programme.

Graphic Design is seen in music videos and I think this is a good example as it is not too obvious, instead it works well complimenting the film.
Idents
An obvious example of design for screen are idents, in particular the famous channel 4 ones. I have looked at these before for visual langage. They are an example of design for screen as they work best as a TV advert.

Promo
Websites are created to promote the release of new films, with games, clips and downloads to keep the attention of the audience.

Online Shops

Graphic design is so important for online shops, especially if they are only available online, as you dont really know what the company are like. Through the graphic design on a website, the company can show its identity. The websites need to be easy to navigate around, to stop a potential customer from getting confused and losing interest in the site. They need to be simple, but also stylish. If the design was too decorative, it may stop the actual products on show from standing out.

Kinetic type

Marcofolio - List of motion typography examples
There are many interesting examples of kinetic typography on Youtube.
This video is a lesson in typography. I think this is a much more interesting way to learn, showing that design for screen can be educational.
The song is Technologic by Daft Punk, and the actions of the lyrics are played out through type.
There are lots of examples of Graphic Design students stop motion typography videos on youtube.
Info Graphics

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words and some examples of info graphics can prove this. Data which would usually be boring can be presented in a way that doesn't bore the viewer through the use of Graphic Design.

Data Flow

I-Pad Apps
With modern technology such as the Apple products I-phones and the I-pad, design for screen is now handheld, and can be taken anywhere.

Website Design

The images on this website are actually made with hand-rendered type, but displayed on screen. The layout on screen is important, and with this design being on screen it allows for the website to do things such as pop-ups.

Interactive Games
On screen, design can become interactive, such as online games.

Film Credits/ DVD Menus

These examples of Graphic Design on a screen are screenshots from the DVD of film 'Cloudy with a chance of meatballs'.

Photoshop Workshop: Postcard Research

For the Photo shop brief, as well as editing images for the front of the postcards, I need to create the back of the postcards. I don't want the backs to be boring, so I decided to look at a few examples of interesting postcards to help inspire me.

Here is a layout for a typical postcard back.

These are really interesting, containing illustrations in the same theme of the design on the front of the postcard.

When researching backs of postcards, nearly all of the examples on show were vintage postcards. These are beautiful but wouldn't fit the style of what I am aiming to produce.

Secret Leeds: Picnic In a Park Research

Hyde Park

As well as visiting St George's field, I also took photographs around Hyde Park (Woodhouse Moor) as this is another possible destination for where the picnic could be held. However, I think it is the biggest park in Leeds centre, and is usually filled with students, so to hold the picnic here would kind of defeat the object of what our project is about.

Parks in Leeds

We used Google Maps to find out where there are parks in Leeds to include in our map.

Tea Room Logo's
For our idea of a Secret tea party to work, we needed to create branding which would mean that the map, app and tree decorations would all work together as a set. To give us inspiration we looked at existing tea shops and their branding.

Footsteps

I visited Leeds City Museum and noticed they used the footsteps idea to guide visitors to the story of Leeds exhibition. This proves that this idea works well, however, it also reveals that it has already been done before, where we are looking to create a unique idea.

Coffee Shops close to Leeds Uni

I walked down the road opposite to the Parkinson Steps of Leeds University to find coffee shops that could be used for our idea, as they are all close to St George's Field. I have photographed the outsides and recorded their addresses.
