Brief 1 / UK Card Retailers

Here are some examples of the cards available from some well known UK card retailers. I've focused on cards with a focus on typography as this is the theme of my brief, as well as looking at stock choices, print finishes, use of colour, shape and size of the card. Some retailers cards are a lot better than others, in particular Paperchase, so I've dedicated a blog post to there cards [see post], where some retailers cards were more the traditional styles and focused on images rather than contemporary typography.

Some well known retailers I was quite disappointed with their selection of cards, such as WH Smith.

Other ones I have looked at include:

Brief 4 / Pentagram Design

Andy suggested that I look into Pentagram's branding after I showed him where I was up to with my 'MGD' logo.

A lot of the branding I had looked at for museum design previously was for sans serif typefaces, and a lot of the work on the Pentagram website is. This makes me think that I should change my logo back to a sans serif typeface. I want it to look professional and modern and work on different medias as shown in the examples below.

I'm still not totally sure where I want to go with the 'MGD' logo, waiting for some feedback after the crit.

Its really clever how the image used in the logo is also used with image in it for other pieces of design for the museum, such as the maps, linking all the pieces of design together to work as a set.

Pentagram seem to have designed nearly every museum logo there is. Most of them are black and white so this shows this is a good colour scheme to stick to.

Brief 4/ Exhibition Maps

I've been collecting general exhibition leaflets and maps from ones I have been to, (see blog post) but wanted to include this one by johnsonbanks that I saw online a while ago as it is so different from the other examples.

There are a few different examples of maps taking you on walks around the V&A, as if you are being guided by different people, in this instance, Paul Smith. The map opens up to be a fully functional map but the way it has been folded together makes different parts stand out and just looks a lot more eye catching than a normal exhibition leaflet, encouraging you to pick one up. I'm becoming really interested in paper folds and would like to bring this in to my work somehow.

Even the stand for the maps has been designed to match. With such an interesting display, it would be hard to walk past this without wanting to pick up a map and find out what is going on.

Brief 4 / Applied Branding

I originally got this book out of the library to help me with my stationery brief, but found lots of things inside relevant to stationery for museums, and branding for stationery in general.

Its got me thinking about the presentation and print finishes, stock choices etc of my final pieces, as well as about pushing the range further.
