Visiting Professional: Ric Bell

Friday 7/10/11 - Ric Bell

Advice:

Presentation

  • Work needs to be easy to navigate - numbered, with colour tabs etc...
  • Everything should be well laid out - including briefs, etc...
  • Good photography is key. Shoot in a natural light, get a tripod
  • Document and label everything
  • The more time you put into presentation the better it will be

End of Year Show

  • It is better to have one A0 print out of all your work rather than having lots of different pieces of mount board stuck to a board
  • You need hundreds of business cards and also postcards of work
  • Think of different formats for business cards to stand out, such as a fold out poster. Include a business card and CV

Placements

  • If you've done a project featuring a real client, send it to them and see what they think
  • Put weekly ideas on your wall
  • Need websites on different platforms such as tumblr, behance etc...
  • You need to be able to talk about your work, and speak to other designers to build your contact base up
  • The best time to apply for placements is when the shows are on
  • CV's should be 1 page A4, containing events, awards, recent qualifications
  • Give specific dates of when you can do placements, and you need to email hundreds of companies. Take any offers as you will learn something, and you can't afford to be picky. Don't just get experience as graphic design agencies, go to printers and paper companies to help you figure out what you want to do. Join small companies
  • Push the boundaries, don't just design on computer
  • Get in touch with people

Good Is... Task Three

Task

With a focus on Stock, Substrate and 'special' Print Finishes find as many variants as possible for each of the following areas of Design: Branding and Identity; Packaging and Promotion; Publishing & Editorial; Information & Wayfinding

You should consider production values, scale and functionality in relation to appropriate contexts and target audiences and evaluate their impact on the design decisions that have been made. Wherever possible you should aim to collect physical/actual examples of print as this will help you to evaluate the important tactile, formal and functional elements of your source material

Clarke & Reilly Branding - Morse Studio

Here, attention to detail has really been paid to this branding identity for a furniture makers.

Clarke & Reilly is a London-based duo creating interiors from sourced artefacts and limited edition, hand-made furniture, textiles & lighting.
Morse Studio was commissioned to create a brand identity using their existing monogram as a starting point. Our approach focuses on creating a distinct typographic style which includes a system of horizontal-dashed rules (a reference to the hand-stitching in much of Clarke & Reilly’s work), and an alternate set of numbers characteristic of late nineteenth century lettering in London. Stationery and launch materials use a rich mix of finishes; the uncharacteristic way in which these elements are combined aims to convey Clarke & Reilly’s unconventional approach.

Graphic Design for Fashion - Byboth

“The cover was printed with three or 4 spot colours with an exposed trimmed edge. The front cover has the graphic design studio names debossed and the reverse has the fashion designers names.
We intentionally did not put our names on the front cover, because it just did not fit in the design, it was so tight… We did want our credit on the spine to wrap into the back cover to link it into the design of the back cover, YES, the publisher was horrified… But this is the benefit of being author and designer, you only step on your own toes…
Overall, we wanted a cover that people want to pick up, this is achieved by the colour… Structurally though, it is completely in line with what we have been doing on the inside. The cover shows best the scale of the objects too, which was painstakingly maintained throughout each page so it feels like all the objects were simply laying down next to each other.”

RCA Catalogue - theluxuryofprotest

Peter of The Luxury of Protest has emailed me about this folded A3 catalogue he and Karin von Ompteda designed for the Royal College of Art. On one side the catalogue highlights seven students representing the seven different schools that comprise Research RCA department.
On the other, the entire student body is visually represent through an information visualization that shows the distribution of all Research students across departments. Each student was recorded with regard to school, department, degree type (MPhil or PhD), project type (Project or Thesis), status (Part or Full-Time), nationality and relationships to collaborators and funding agencies (arched connection lines).

Good Is... (Logo Research)

I have researched logos to do with my 'good', as well as logos that represent the statements I made in the concept development workshop. With the logo designs I have chosen I have written my reason for choosing them as some of my statements weren't easy to find logos to represent them.

Here are the logos for the Jamboree's I have attended, both UK and international logos:

- It is a life changing event because you make new friends and learn new skills

(People who have attended volunteer camps and worked abroad say these events are life-changing)

- Guides who are at the right age could be excited to go

(Official Logos)

- Those who are not involved in scouting/guiding probably wouldn't care as it seems irrelevant

(Young people may be involved in other after-school clubs and not scouting/guiding)

- It is better than any other camp due to the scale and the amount of people, and the activities available

(Logos for smaller scale scout camps)

- It would be a teacher as you learn so much and care for others

(Here are the logos from the school/colleges I have attended)

- It would be Beyonce as she is all about girl power, and is an active, interesting person

(Two examples of Beyonce logos off her album)

- It would be disneyland as its somewhere busy and full of excitement

(Disneyland resort logo)

- It would be a globe as you feel you are seeing all of the world in one place

(These are travel companies helping people to see the world)

- It would be a festival as there is dancing, partying and camping

(A few festival logos)
