Advice:
Presentation
- Work needs to be easy to navigate - numbered, with colour tabs etc...
- Everything should be well laid out - including briefs, etc...
- Good photography is key. Shoot in a natural light, get a tripod
- Document and label everything
- The more time you put into presentation the better it will be
End of Year Show
- It is better to have one A0 print out of all your work rather than having lots of different pieces of mount board stuck to a board
- You need hundreds of business cards and also postcards of work
- Think of different formats for business cards to stand out, such as a fold out poster. Include a business card and CV
Placements
- If you've done a project featuring a real client, send it to them and see what they think
- Put weekly ideas on your wall
- Need websites on different platforms such as tumblr, behance etc...
- You need to be able to talk about your work, and speak to other designers to build your contact base up
- The best time to apply for placements is when the shows are on
- CV's should be 1 page A4, containing events, awards, recent qualifications
- Give specific dates of when you can do placements, and you need to email hundreds of companies. Take any offers as you will learn something, and you can't afford to be picky. Don't just get experience as graphic design agencies, go to printers and paper companies to help you figure out what you want to do. Join small companies
- Push the boundaries, don't just design on computer
- Get in touch with people
