Digital Design Production... Initial Research

For this module of Digital design production we will mainly be looking at motion graphics, tv idents, title sequences and kinetic typography. Later on in the year we will be covering web design. To start off with some inspiration on a topic I know little about, I've looked at vimeo, youtube and some other links on the useful links pages on moodle.

Video

I have looked at so many different videos on these websites, and I included a varied mix of video's that I have initially felt inspired by, as I'm not yet sure what I will need to be creating.

This video relates to a storyline based on the lifes on teenagers from the E4 series Skins. I think this video is beautiful and not what you would expect to see from this type of television programme. I like how the elements are hand drawn / painted, yet they have been turned into an animation. It is really inspiring and I would love to be able to create something like this.

Making this video must have been very complicated, and I don't think I would be expected to create anything like this, as it isn't strictly graphic design, but I was very impressed and entertained so wanted to include it as an example of something I had looked at.

Sophie recommended that I look at some of Julia Pott's work and I have to say I am amazed. From the start, I love everything from the hand drawn type, to the illustration, and especially the dialect between the characters. It is cute as well as being humorous at the same time. I like the colours that are used, as they all work well together, and the subtle textures used also help to finish this off. As I am interested in illustration, I would love to one day be able to create something like this, but I think I would need a lot of practise first.

We were recommended to look at this video, due to the direction of the text. It may not seem anything special now, but at the time, this effect was probably amazing. It is important when I make my video to think about how things will enter the screen and leave and which angles and directions things will move in.

A Record Of Life from Owen Gatley and Luke Jinks on Vimeo.

Here I like how it feels as if we are moving in to the image, as the different elements fly into us. I like the hand drawn style, with the textured background, and hopefully when I learn some after effects skills I will be able to create something like this. I think the choice of song also really suits the content.

This video uses type as image to create the words which are then animated across the page. It looks very complicated to make but I like how the letters move across the page.

Visiting Professional: Generation Press

Yesterday, the studio visit was from professional printers, generation press. We finally met Anand, a previous LCA BAGD graduate who we have all heard a lot about. Generation press are an environmentally friendly company.

- They did a collaboration series of posters: NFCU (not for commercial use), which were posted around NY and London. Their logo was not used on this project, it was all anonymous, as they believe in doing things because you want to, not for the money. This is a motto I would like to be able to live by!
- Impressive colour gradient edging
- Printed lots of quality stationary
- Kent Lyons book - pulp to paper, very successful, now even on sale in the design museum
- Use colour mill paper
- Look at website for more of their work

Good Is... Japan Research

As I will be including information about the next Jamboree in the information pack I am making, I have researched what information and designs are available already for the jamboree, however, I could only find a limited amount of material, as the Jamboree is still quite a long time away. To add to this, I have found out some information about Japan, as it was recommended in my crit that I include this in the information pack.

23rd World Scout Jamboree

Peace Programme

One-day off-site programme to Hiroshima will provide opportunity for all the participants to learn from the history of 1945. Participants will visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park including the museum.

Peace Memorial Ceremony

As 2015 is the 70th anniversary since the atomic bomb had been dropped, we are seeking possibility to some representative Scouts - possibly one from each NSOs - to attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima.

Global Development Village (GDV)

GDV will be an on-site module programme, which tries to raise awareness over the global issues such as peace, environment, development, human rights and health among participants. As 23WSJ is held in Japan, GDV will focus on the disaster mitigation. We will ask for active involvement of the UN agencies, NGOs and NPOs. GDV programme will be distributed to the world for pre-event materials, as well as the part of the Join-in-Jamboree programme.

Exploring Nature

A full day module programme that will foster better understanding of the surrounding nature will also bring appreciation to the environment. This programme will be held in Yamaguchi City where the Kirara-hama is.

Cross Road of Culture (CRC)

CRC will be an activity to promote exchange of cultures, and learn respect to the cultures of own and the others.
Also in the CRC programme, we will try to have a programme aims to deepen the cultural understanding of Japan from traditional to pop culture among the participants.

City of Science (COS)

COS, which will be one-day programme in Kirara-hama, will deepen understanding of advances in science and technology and the benefits and problems associated with science. This programme provides a venue for learning about the development of fuel cells and other energy sources of the future, ecological problems, and robotics and automotive technologies.

Community Services

There will be a day for community services. Participants can compare their own community by seeing the other community. This programme would include practical implementation of the “Reaching Out” strategy in the local community. Participants will be able to experience real Japan by working with local people.

Water Activities

Water activities such as sailing, wind surfing, snorkeling, rafting and fishing will be carried out at lakes, rivers or the nearby coast.

Visiting Professional: Catalogue

- Tom Pratt and Oliver Shaw are previous graphic design students from Leeds College of Art; together they make catalogue.
- They designed the prospectus and open day flyers for the college.
- They work with independent people rather than commercially
- They mix their print shop with their design work
- They still do their own work to display at exhibitions, and recently branded Loop Arts Fair

Advice:
- Invest in a good space, as it makes such a difference, its hard to work from home
- Contact shops you like about selling zines and other products
- They encourage attending shows and exhibitions to market your own work
- Watermark your work when showing people who haven't paid for it yet, as otherwise they can steal it

Here are some examples of their work:

Good is... Existing Product Research

Filofax Research

Primary photographs of fun faxes I had as a child. I'm very organised so loved these! I liked the activities too, and found these quite entertaining. There are lots of 'extras' in these fun faxes, they are more than a diary, and this is what I think will keep the guides who I am designing for interested. The content includes: puzzles, stickers, door hangers, bookmarks, posters, personal section and story lines. The age range of my audience is a little older though than the target audience of these fun faxes, so I have looked at filo faxes as well, to inspire a slightly more sophisticated design. It has also made me think about making my product even more useful, by including a pen holder, and storage pockets, and personal photo space.
