Communication is a Virus: Part 1 - Charities

Initial Research

I began by looking at examples of what graphic design is already out there for charities.

Mail shot diary - A man who has collected a years worth of mail shots story  Another collection - Similar story  Mail shot article - Proves well made mail shots can work
Examples of mail shots/charity donation bags  Lindsey Whittle - D&AD Winner

Selection of leaflets advertising charities collected from around college

Websites
I looked at websites of well known UK charities that we could persuade people to get involved with rather than just giving money.

The psychology of helping others

Why does helping others feel good? What are the reasons we help others? American Psychological Association

"Over the years, pshychologists have identified five primary motivations for volunteering, believing people who volunteer to have an agenda:
  • Values. Volunteering to satisfy personal values or humanitarian concerns. For some people this can have a religious component.
  • Community concern. Volunteering to help a particular community, such as a neighborhood or ethnic group, to which you feel attached.
  • Esteem enhancement. Volunteering to feel better about yourself or escape other pressures.
  • Understanding. Volunteering to gain a better understanding of other people, cultures or places.
  • Personal development. Volunteering to challenge yourself, meet new people and make new friends, or further your career.
Interestingly, the researchers have also found that people who have more seemingly "selfish" motivations--esteem enhancement, personal development and understanding--are more likely to stick with a volunteering organization longer than people with more "other focused" motivations, such as values.

This research could help organizations that rely on volunteers. For example, if the organizations can figure out their volunteers' primary motives for volunteering, then they could tailor ads and other recruitment strategies to address those motivations--and they could try to steer the volunteers to activities most likely to satisfy them.

Do people do altruistic things--including volunteering--because they are truly altruistic and selfless, or because they themselves receive some sort of benefit from every altruistic-seeming act?"

Blood Donation

96% of us rely on just 4% to give blood which saves lives. Giving blood is really easy and doesnt take much time at all. It takes about an hour in total to give blood. There are 24 blood donation centres across the UK with a huge number of mobile blood donor units stopping for sessions at your local supermarket car park.

Organ Donation
Another way of helping is donating your organs, you can register online and can donate your organs if you were to pass away, your organs could help save anothers life when your gone. Organs such as your heart and kidneys to even your eyeballs can be donated. Many of us would be happy to accept an organ but only 26% of us are willing to donate our organs to save lives.

Visiting Professional: Ben Hinchliffe (The Beautiful Meme)

Ben is a designer at 'The Beautiful Meme', a design agency in York, who are a mix between art and business. (A meme is an idea that transcends genes) Previously, Stone Soup. They are not about safe ideas, but taking risks and really pushing ideas, which can be seen particularly through their re branding of various companies.

Hot Dog Fold

This page shows how to create a hot dog fold book.

Children's Illustrators

As I decided to digitally draw my illustrations for my hot dog fold book instead of drawing them by hand as initially planned, I decided to research some artists to inspire my designs. These are a few of the artists whose work really stood out to me, mainly due to the simplicity of the images and the bright, bold colours.

Opposite Quotes

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference.
The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference.
And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.
- Elie Wiesel

Think Exist

- The opposite of bravery is not cowardice but conformity.
- The most exciting attractions are between two opposites that never meet.
- Our mind is capable of passing beyond the dividing line we have drawn for it. Beyond the pairs of opposites of which the world consists, other, new insights begin.
- The opposite of love is apathy, and hate is really the same as love. If you're so consumed by hatred for someone, you might as well be loving them, because you're thinking about them for the same amount of time.
-The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.
-Almost every wise saying has an opposite one, no less wise, to balance it.

Visiting Professional: Rob Ryan

On Friday 25th February, I attended the eagerly anticipated talk from artist Rob Ryan. Rob has been described in the past as a graphic designer, but he considers himself an artist, mainly because this is what he studied at art college. It was hugely inspirational to hear from an artist whose work I am so fond of.

Visiting Talk: D&AD

D&AD

D&AD is a charity, established 1962, which looks for creative excellence. It promotes, highlights and supports creative talent. Every year there is an annual, and design awards. The criteria for the work submitted is that there must be good ideas, which are well executed and on brief. The most important thing is originality - new ideas, and the work should be presented in a way that hasn't be seen before. It should demonstrate your skills, communicate quickly, refer to the brief, and have not been done before. Push the brief, make it interesting.

In the first round, the judges ask whether a piece answers the criteria or not. The work that does goes through to the second round, and the judges agree/disagree about what they like. A shortlist is made, and in the third round it is decided who will take first place etc.

Shellsuit Zombie

Shellsuit Zombie's advice:

1. Go further - don't go with the first idea
2. Go crazy - don't be embarrassed of your ideas
3. Go original - with a groundbreaking concept
4. Go in other peoples shoes - whats in your head might not be what others see, make sure it makes sense
5. Go and try - understand the product/service you are promoting
