Visiting Talk: D&AD

D&AD

D&AD is a charity, established 1962, which looks for creative excellence. It promotes, highlights and supports creative talent. Every year there is an annual, and design awards. The criteria for the work submitted is that there must be good ideas, which are well executed and on brief. The most important thing is originality - new ideas, and the work should be presented in a way that hasn't be seen before. It should demonstrate your skills, communicate quickly, refer to the brief, and have not been done before. Push the brief, make it interesting.

In the first round, the judges ask whether a piece answers the criteria or not. The work that does goes through to the second round, and the judges agree/disagree about what they like. A shortlist is made, and in the third round it is decided who will take first place etc.

Shellsuit Zombie's advice:

1. Go further - don't go with the first idea
2. Go crazy - don't be embarrassed of your ideas
3. Go original - with a groundbreaking concept
4. Go in other peoples shoes - whats in your head might not be what others see, make sure it makes sense
5. Go and try - understand the product/service you are promoting
