Degree Shows

I visited all three Leeds degree shows and was impressed with a lot of students work. It was very inspiring and beneficial looking around all the work, I have made some notes on my PPD blog about useful things from these shows.

Leeds Met...

Here is some of my favourite work from their degree show. Their course is Graphic Art and Design so its a lot more arty than ours, however, there was lots of nice print work and examples of bookmaking. Although most of the work produced is quite different to the work produced on out course, I still enjoyed looking around this exhibition.

Leeds Uni...   leedsschoolofdesign.co.uk

At Leeds University degree show, as well as enjoying looking around the graphic design work, I had a good look round the printed pattern shows, as I found there to be a lot of illustrators. The set out of the graphic design show was very unusual, which makes it stand out, especially the fake grass! I liked that there was a graduate show catalogue newspaper, containing all of the names of the graphic design students, so you could find out more about the designers afterwards.

Leeds College of Art...

So much inspiring work from very talented students, makes me feel slightly intimated but hopeful that my show will be this good in my third year!

Business Cards

Yearbook and Degree Show Promotional Material/ Signage

Something that really made Leeds college of art stand out was the quality of the signage up and around college, by a third year graphic student. It was obvious that there was a degree show on, and was easy for everyone to get around, unlike at other shows which were slightly more confusing.

I also attended last years degree show, and saved the flyer and map for this.

I have a copy of each third year class' yearbook, and hope that I am in with the chance of working on ours when the time comes.

Speaking from experience: Illustration

As I am adding illustrations to each page on the blog, I started with some secondary research for inspiration, as I had quite a few ideas but wasn't sure where to start.

These are the tutors wearing masks of their faces designed by a previous student on the course.

All images from print and pattern.

These images all include relevant items to the ones I will be drawing.

Simple illustrations of everyday objects. I want to include drawings of envelopes and mobile phones on the contact page.

Line focused drawings of equipment. On the 'before you start' page, illustrations of equipment will decorate the lists.

All images from the print and pattern book.

These images may not contain the items which I will be drawing, but I have looked at the different styles of illustration to give me some ideas. I like the collage cut outs (such as the owl images) and think I could  use this process to make my equipment, but with plain card and more detail instead of patterned paper. I like some of the 'cute' designs, such as where the objects have faces and are brightly coloured. I would like to try this but at the same time this might not appeal to everyone on the course. I think the more sketchy illustrations where the focus is on the line and the shape of the object would appeal to a lot of people, so this would be a good thing to try. I could also try creating my objects in illustrator, my tracing over photographs. Another idea is to create 3d mock-ups of each item of equipment and to photograph these. I will keep looking back at these images as I create my own illustrations.

I found this image in the 2010 YCN student annual and decided to research the artist further as the designs are very much like the ones I have created. Looking at the website, I found many more examples which are beautifully crafted and very neat, some looking very much like the real objects, unlike my designs, and are very inspiring, but, at the same time it makes me wonder should I do something else as this has already been done?

Speaking from experience: Secondary Research (Blogs)

I thought that the first place to look for research of blog designs should be members of our course, as well as second and first year blogs. After this, I will look for inspirational website designs and identities that I think are relevant. I want the identity of the blog to be personal to the course, rather than looking to flash or professional, I would like it to represent the kind of work we produce.

Idea

This is an already existing course blog, where viewers can come and see what the group as a whole are up to. A group blog is easier and quicker to look at rather than looking through each individual students blog.
