Good is.... Task One

Task:

Find at least 5 diverse examples of the effective/creative use of print in the following areas of design:
  • Branding and Identity
  • Packaging and Promotion
  • Publishing & Editorial
  • Information & Wayfinding
You should aim to identify design work from a range of commercial/cultural references, target audiences and creative contexts.

Packaging & Promotion

What is packaging and promotion?
  • Packaging is the science, art, and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use.
  • Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells.
  • Packaging also refers to the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages.
  • Promotion is the communication link between sellers and buyers for the purpose of influencing, informing, or persuading a potential buyer's purchasing decision.
  • (Boxes on shelves, things we wear, things we hold while using something, point of sale units, banners, floor graphics,& more….)

Publishing & Editorial

What is publishing and editorial?
  • Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature or information—the activity of making information available to the general public.
  • Traditionally, the term refers to the distribution of printed works such as books and newspapers but design publishing includes the stages of the development, acquisition, copyediting, graphic design, production (printing) of Magazines, Novels, Coffee table books, Manuals, Reference books etc.

This beautiful cover is for a book about letterpress, and therefore, all the covers were letterpress printed, onto heavy 100 point thickness recycled cover boards. The boards were printed with day glo ink. There is a contrast of raw and refined due to the bright colour next to the gray board.

Information & Wayfinding

What is information and way finding?
  • Information graphics (infographics) are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These infographics present complex or unfamiliar information quickly and clearly. (Harry Beck-Underground Tube map is a good example)
  • Traffic signs and other public signs rely heavily on information graphics, such as stylised human figures, icons and emblems to represent concepts such as yield, caution, and the direction of traffic. Public places such as transit terminals usually have some sort of integrated "signage system" with standardised icons and stylised maps.
  • Technical manuals and instructions make extensive use of diagrams and infographics. Newspapers often use infographics to describe something that is either complex or unfamiliar. A visual example might be how many London busses high is Mount Everest.

Airport Signs

The bright, attractive colours used for the gates and symbols stand out across the black background of these airport signs. They are designed to stand out against everything else in the busy airport.

This guide takes as its subject the area from Old Street to Hackney Wick, exploring and uncovering delights old and new, places to eat and drink, cultural centres, shops and markets. Even veteran east Londoners are likely to learn of new places to visit.
The map features a Brazilian butcher on Mare Street and a Mexican food and supplies warehouse off Hackney Road; a candle shop and paper bag supplier, pubs, cafés, and even some galleries. The 99 entries represent the very best east London has to offer.
This is a collaboration with the excellent Herb lester Associates. It is A2 (420x594mm) folded to A6 (105x148mm), and litho printed in the UK on recycled paper.

(We) decided to create different maps of the museum, based on notable people’s favourite items. We drew up lists of people that we and the museum thought would select an interesting and unusual ‘journey’ through one of the world’s greatest museums."
According to Johnson, each map reflects the personality of the individual but also conforms to an overall style. Particularly notable was Johnson's "unusual ‘map fold’ that creates the illusion of many pieces of paper, but is just folded from one piece of paper."

Weekend Trip to London

I spent the first weekend of July in London with some friends, and had a great time finding new inspirational artists. We went to the New Designers exhibition, D&AD New Blood, Museum of Britain at the Southbank Centre and shopping on Columbia Road.

New Designers

I was amazed by the talent at the New Designers exhibition and found lots of beautiful illustrations. As this is the path I am interested in I found a lot of the work inspiring, some even relating to ideas I have had for my summer brief project.

New Blood

This was my first new blood but I'll definitely be heading back next year, hopefully one day I could be exhibiting!

Museum of Britain

At the Southbank Centre, I went to the festival of britain museum, where I found lots of vintage posters which were fascinating to look at.

Rob Ryan Shop - Columbia Road

On my trip to London I had to fit in a stop to Ryantown, Rob Ryan's little shop. I have been a fan of his for a while, especially after he came and did a talk at college. I bought this lovely tea towel as a souvenir!

Bag and postcard

For my birthday, I also received this lovely Rob Ryan book off Sophie, which he talked about when he visited.

Shops on Columbia Road

There are some beautiful little shops on Columbia road that I found while looking for the Rob Ryan shop, so I've collected some business cards to look at their websites, as the shops featured lots of nice illustrated and screen printed goods.

Leeds Museum

After looking at the vintage posters in London, I found these while looking around Leeds City Museum. Vintage style typography and posters is definitely something I want to look at more in the future, as its now very on trend.

Degree Shows

I visited all three Leeds degree shows and was impressed with a lot of students work. It was very inspiring and beneficial looking around all the work, I have made some notes on my PPD blog about useful things from these shows.

Leeds Met...

Here is some of my favourite work from their degree show. Their course is Graphic Art and Design so its a lot more arty than ours, however, there was lots of nice print work and examples of bookmaking. Although most of the work produced is quite different to the work produced on out course, I still enjoyed looking around this exhibition.

Leeds Uni...   leedsschoolofdesign.co.uk

At Leeds University degree show, as well as enjoying looking around the graphic design work, I had a good look round the printed pattern shows, as I found there to be a lot of illustrators. The set out of the graphic design show was very unusual, which makes it stand out, especially the fake grass! I liked that there was a graduate show catalogue newspaper, containing all of the names of the graphic design students, so you could find out more about the designers afterwards.

Leeds College of Art...

So much inspiring work from very talented students, makes me feel slightly intimated but hopeful that my show will be this good in my third year!

Yearbook and Degree Show Promotional Material/ Signage

Something that really made Leeds college of art stand out was the quality of the signage up and around college, by a third year graphic student. It was obvious that there was a degree show on, and was easy for everyone to get around, unlike at other shows which were slightly more confusing.

I also attended last years degree show, and saved the flyer and map for this.

I have a copy of each third year class' yearbook, and hope that I am in with the chance of working on ours when the time comes.
