On Friday 19th November, Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Photographer Mark Howe came to college to give us a presentation showing some of his work as well as giving useful advice, such as:
- Love constructive criticism
- Always ask for improvements
- Work on your skills
- Read books as well as looking at the pictures
- Carry a notebook around to fill with ideas
- Make a scrapbook full of things that inspire
- Redefine the brief if you know what could work better
- Before starting research, write down what you already know about a subject - this is common knowledge
- Know your competition
- Reflect and learn
- Work done outside of college is good for portfolio, for companies/charities/family, really makes portfolio stand out
- Collaborate - email existing designers
- Have a business card so people don't forget you
- Ask for placements or projects, have a go at doing a brief
- Keep a log of every designer you have spoken to
- When asking for a placement, reference a project they have done that you like so it doesn't look like a standard email
