For the brief 'Alphabet Soup', I picked the random word knit. When researching this, I started with the obvious, looking at physical knitted alphabets.
I decided to initially search for the most obvious thing to do with my random word, knit - a knitted alphabet. In these letterforms, I can find the characteristics of the word knit as defined in the dictionary; the parts are united, secure, linked together.
Researching relevant fonts
I then researched existing fonts with relevance to the theme. It would be interesting to use fonts with texture in my letterforms, as this again relates to my random word in the physical sense.
